FRC appoints Melanie McLaren as Executive Director of Governance, Codes and Standards and Michelle Sansom as Director of Accounting

The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) today announces the appointments of Melanie McLaren as Executive Director of Codes and Standards and Michelle Sansom as Director of Accounting.

Melanie, who will start at the FRC on 11 June, will have overall lead responsibility for maintaining an effective framework of UK codes and standards, including accounting and reporting standards.

As Director of Accounting, Michelle will lead our work on the development of the FRC’s priorities on international accounting standards and on finalising changes to UK GAAP. She will start in this role on 6 April.

Commenting on these appointments, Chief Executive Stephen Haddrill said,

“Both appointments are important to our maintenance of an effective framework of UK codes and standards, including accounting and reporting standards. Together, they will play a lead role in seeking to influence the development of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

“Melanie brings to the FRC a wealth of experience of accounting and financial reporting. She is an experienced business leader with a strong financial and professional services background, with an in depth expertise in risk and regulation. Her experience of insurance also gives her a strong insight into actuarial matters.

“Michelle, currently a Project Director within the Accounting Standards Board (ASB), is an exceptionally qualified individual with a wealth of experience and awareness of international and accounting issues in the UK and Ireland and I’m sure will play a pivotal role in developing and disseminating accounting and corporate best practice.”

  2. Melanie is an experienced business leader with strong financial and professional services background and in-depth expertise in risk, regulation and assurance. An experienced chartered accountant, between 1999 and 2009 Melanie was a partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers within their Financial Services Assurance Practice. In May 2010 Melanie joined Friends Provident as interim Chief Risk Officer, before becoming Business Risk Director in September of that year. Between August 2011 and June 2012, Melanie was interim Chief Risk Officer of the enlarged Friends Life Group. Melanie qualified as a chartered accountant in 1990 and read Arabic Studies and German at St Andrew’s University. Melanie is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.
  3. Michelle is currently a Project Director in the Accounting Standards Board, part of the Financial Reporting Council. Michelle joined the Accounting Standards Board seven years ago having spent several years working at a large multinational conglomerate where, as Head of Accounting for the UK, she worked on a number of corporate transactions, including M&A, project and restructuring activities. Her work in industry has enabled Michelle to bring a practical approach to the development of financial reporting standards. Prior to working in industry Michelle qualified as a chartered accountant and worked as an auditor in two of the large accountancy firms. Michelle is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales.
