A major conference today, 25th June, will discuss how the City can take advantage of a deeper and more diversified financial system in Europe. The Financial Reporting Council (FRC) will host the event entitled ‘Capital Markets Union and Corporate Governance: How can investor stewardship be enhanced in Europe?’ at the London Stock Exchange. Speakers including Keith Skeoch, Chief Executive of Standard Life Investments, Gay Huey Evans, FRC Deputy Chair, Manfred Gentz, Chairman of the German Corporate Governance Commission, Martin Wheatley, Chief Executive of the FCA and Stephanie Flanders, Chief Market Strategist at J.P. Morgan Asset Management will discuss the opportunities and threats from a European Capital Markets Union (CMU) and how corporate governance and stewardship can be enhanced in Europe to facilitate efficient capital movements.

Gay Huey Evans, FRC Deputy Chairman will introduce the conference this morning:

“Rebalancing the availability of risk capital and debt is a challenge for Europe but it could help smaller, innovative companies to unlock investment. Smaller quoted companies are characterised as the engines of economic growth, vital to generating long-term sustainable growth and creating jobs.  Investors, though, will only be keen to invest if they can be confident in and trust the information they receive from smaller entities. Good quality corporate reporting, governance and audit are therefore important in fostering investment.”

The conference will consider key issues including whether CMU has the right focus, how smaller companies might gain access to more risk capital, the challenges of a unified European capital market, how it could complement the banking system in Europe, issues for cross border stewardship and what the UK experience in developing its capital markets has to offer Member States.

Other speakers discussing these important issues are: Simon Fraser, Chair of the Investor Forum; Philip Coggan, The Economist’s Buttonhole Columnist; Susannah Haan, Secretary General EuropeanIssuers; Antony Manchester the Swiss Finance Council’s Senior Advisor and Ian Pitfield UBS Global Asset Management’ Head of Governance and Stewardship.
